Working the Kinks Out

Today's post is a quick one, since I have to get ready for my upcoming trip home! My mother is having a significant birthday this week, and since I need to get my wedding dress altered, I figured I may as well take the excuse to visit. Who am I kidding? I just want to see everyone! It's so much easier to visit now that I live in Chicago, and the flights are about 1/3 as expensive as the flights from LA to New York were.

Whenever I visit my family, I'm so busy seeing people and going places that I need a day or two to rest after I get back. My family all lives fairly close to my parents, and my godbabies are right across the street, so I get to pack a lot of visiting into even a short trip. My little sister is sort of an astrology buff, but in a self-aware, tongue-in-cheek kind of way, and she always tells me that I'm basically a textbook Cancer. I love my family, like to be at home, and have all the feelings all the time. It's good to know that my sign fits!

Today's outfit photos feature a new-to-me skirt that I picked up from the Pinup Girl Clothing Swap/Sell group on Facebook. It's an older design, so it hasn't been available on the store's site for a while. I was pretty excited to find it for a really great price!
It's called the Kinky Box skirt, and unsurprisingly, it has lovely big box pleats all around the skirt. I'm so into the print and the vibrant red and pink together! The skirt falls just below my knee, so this style is a decent bit shorter on me than my Jenny skirts. It makes for a nice change of pace! I've heard that the Darling Dames skirts from PUG are shorter than the Jennys as well, but I haven't really fallen in love with any of the prints they come in. (Seriously, I'm too old to be this lazy about just getting things hemmed, but I am what I am.)

The belt I'm wearing here isn't actually tight at all; the wide waistband of the skirt is what's giving me the illusion of a waist. I'm into it! I wore it with my favorite striped shirt, since I love stripes with everything. Putting this outfit together made me realize how desperately I need to pick up a pair of red flats, since I actually don't have any. I have a million red brooches, but decided to go a little unexpected and pop on my Tinkerbell brooch from the Sparkle Bakery on Etsy.
Tinkerbell and stripes and flowers and silver shoes, oh my!
My calves haven't been this pale in eight years. It'll pass (I think!)
Something went horribly wrong with my posture here, but I like my "not to be messed with" facial expression, so I'll let it slide for now.

Does anyone have any recommendations for comfy red flats?

  1. I have the Kinky Box in purple. I've never worn in.....it was quite snug...but I think I'll try it on when I get home to see if my workouts have been successful :)

    1. Ahhhh, the purple one is SO gorgeous!! Hope it's comfier now <3. Mine is pretty snug too -- I think it fits a little tighter than my Jenny skirts. Post pics if you can!

  2. Fantastic pattern matching. I love how a classic striped top like that can almost become a neutral unto itself.

    Happy travels!

    1. Thank you! You are so right about stripes sometimes acting as a neutral -- I'll wear stripes with just about anything. I feel the same way about leopard print.

  3. I really like this look bc I haven't seen that many Hawaiian prints with stripes and it works so well! I'm surprised they didn't keep this collection longer bc there was so much hype surrounding it! Looks lovely on you!

    1. Aw, thank you! I'm stripe-happy, as you know. I used to feel the same way about polka dots, but I have a sad lack of polka dots in my wardrobe these days :'(. I'm surprised by how quickly the Hawaiian print stuff came and went -- whenever I see anything from this collection on eBay, it's ridiculously expensive, so I'd think the demand was definitely there!
