Review: Trashy Diva Trixie in Ruffled Feathers

It's been a very exciting week of retro/pinup-style events! Last week my very first guest post went up at Pinup Persuasion, and I'm currently working on another guest post for one of my favorite hometown heroes! On Saturday I met a woman from one of the Facebook groups I'm in, and yesterday I went to the dunes for a photoshoot with the brilliant mind behind Atomic Lucite! After admiring her work for so long, and filling my (new) jewelry box (which I purchased specifically because of my Atomic Lucite habit) with her creations, it was beyond awesome to actually meet her! Those photos are sure to pop up in a future post.

Tonight, I'm going to a meet up of Trashy Diva fangirls in downtown Chicago, and I'm really looking forward to meeting some local ladies with similar style interests. I decided to wear my newest Trashy Diva dress, the Trixie in Ruffled Feathers. I'm a bit nervous that this is akin to wearing the band's T-shirt to the concert, since it's from their latest collection, but I'll be going straight from work, and I think this dress works better as professional attire than some of my other TD.

The last few Trashy Diva collections haven't really caught my fancy, since I'm super into bright prints these days, but when I saw the previews for this dress, I was pretty sure I'd end up going for it. I tend to look better in autumnal shades, or (as I like to think of them) colors from the Crayola Bold marker pack.
Above: my childhood in one photo. So much coloring!

This print reminds me of a mosaic that my Hallock grandparents had hanging in their kitchen when I was a kid, which made me want it even more! I was debating whether to get the Trixie or the Sweetie, and decided to go with the Trixie, as I thought the Sweetie might make me look (more) top-heavy, while the Trixie looked more likely to give me the illusion of a waist and hips.

After settling on the Trixie, I waffled a bit on whether to follow the size chart or size down to a Small. Since I'd been burned when following the size chart for another Trashy Diva dress, I asked the queen of Trashy Diva, Bristol, for sizing advice. After considering her advice, I decided to size down, and after ordering, spent a few days worrying that I'd made a rather expensive mistake. When it arrived and I tried it on, I breathed a massive sigh of relief! I think the medium would have been a bit baggy in the waist, to be perfectly honest, even though my measurements fall squarely within the lower end of the medium range. From what I've gleaned, the sizing across Trashy Diva collections can be a bit persnickety depending on the fabric used, so in future, I'll keep consulting fellow Divas before I order.

I'm seriously in love with this dress! It's comfortable, yet I feel like the hottest of stuff, and it's such a delightful print. The straps are adjustable, which is always a plus when you're 5'2, and the skirt hits at the absolute perfect spot. It has a full circle skirt, which is my favorite type of skirt, but sadly, no pockets.  I'm a big fan of the pleating at the bustline, and the straps are perfectly placed to hide my bra straps. Win! The only problem with this dress is that I think it might've kicked off a new obsession with this style…
It's such a lovely fluttery skirt!

Real talk: I am super proud of my calves.
I'm sure that if the wind would ever stop blowing, it would twirl perfectly. In the meantime, here's an imperfect twirl.
Oh look, I have a waist!

  2. This print really grew on me when I kept seeing it on all of you ladies! I didn't realize it was a print of roosters on the site for reason (was probably half awake when I saw it). Anyway, you look great and that's so awesome about all of the upcoming stuff! That's so cool about the Atomic Lucite news especially! And, haha wearing the band's tee to the concert. That tickled me. But I think you'll be fine at this event; so many people have to wait for sales etc that it's like you'll be the hipster of wearing this print before everyone had it!! You're so in the clear, at least in my book! XO

    1. It grew on me when I realized that there's endless potential for slightly suggestive jokes if one wears a rooster-print dress ;). It's incredibly comfortable, too! I had SO much fun at that photo shoot, and I'm so sad that she's moving away.

I was the only one in this print!
