One Skirt, Three Ways: Italian Landscape Jenny Skirt

Reading this post, some of you might be wondering "Emily, you have this print in a dress. Why also get the skirt?"

Answer: because it's so gorgeous! This installment of One Piece, Three Ways aims to convince you that you can never have too much of a good thing! The Italian Jenny skirt from Pinup Girl Clothing gets a lot of love: when it was restocked recently, I'm pretty sure half of my Instagram feed lost their minds over it, and for very good reason. I had picked one up from Miss Amy May right before the restock, or I would have joined everyone who immediately ordered it. Today, I'll show you how I styled this skirt for a casual day of errands, a night out, and work.

Outfit #1: Knockin' Around Town

I wore this outfit a couple of weeks ago to go to the grocery store, grab coffee, and just generally live my life for a day. The teal tank top jumped out at me as an obvious pairing with the grayish-blue color in the skirt, and (bonus!) it made the perfect backdrop for my Snape brooch from Atomic Lucite.
The feels! Oh, the humanity!

I wore my Malco Modes Samantha petticoat with this outfit, even though I had to roll the petticoat at the waistband a couple of times, since the ruby red color is an almost-perfect match for the skirt. There's never really a time when I feel a very full skirt is inappropriate, so I often run errands in a petticoat and an incongruously-casual top. I've had this particular top for so long that I can't even remember where I got it, which nearly never happens!

Outfit #2: Colorful Date-Night Wear

My second spin on this skirt involved an unusual color combination. I had seen this olive peasant top on lots of stylish ladies, and in particular, I'd admired this lovely outfit. (This photo actually convinced me that I needed the navy blue floral Jenny skirt, despite my fear of spiders and general avoidance of navy.) While I usually gravitate to (and have to restrain myself from) full-on Christmas-colored outfits, when this top arrived, I thought it would make for a cute, if unexpected, outfit. I went with white shoes and purse because spring is here, darn it!, and a silver belt for a final surprising twist. These shoes are epically comfortable, too, which makes them a viable choice for Chicago rambling. I went with my Zooey petticoat from Malco Modes, for a slightly more restaurant-friendly, manageable level of poof.

I still haven't figured out where, exactly, one would affix a brooch to a peasant-style top, so if anyone has any hot tips, I'm all ears!

Outfit #3: Workwear
Another exciting new backdrop!

Full disclosure: the dress code where I work is quite flexible. If you work in an office with a very strict dress code, this look ain't gonna fly. For my needs, though, this outfit is basically perfect! I've had this Banana Republic top for quite a few years now, and it's really a workwear MVP, as it only has a few buttons and they're all above the bust. No risk of gaping, yet all the work-friendly snazziness!

I'm wearing what I like to call my "Left Bank" glasses, since I feel very French New-Wave in them, a bold red lip, and my favorite work carryall. I couldn't resist sneaking in one of my favorite brooches, though: my 'help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi' TV from Atomic Lucite! Finally, I left the petticoat at home, since it's sort of tough to fit in my desk chair and focus on work when I'm wearing a frothy petticoat. As you can see, the skirt still has a surprising amount of fullness all on its own.

Honestly, the hardest thing about creating an outfit with this skirt is narrowing it down to just one top! The skirt also works so well with stripes (hello, gondolier!), polka dots, basic black, and plum. This series isn't called "One Piece, Seven Ways," though, so you'll have to keep a weather eye on my Instagram to see those looks.

Which of these outfits do you like best? Would you wear Outfit #3 to work?

  1. Oh man, I can't pick a favorite! I love the green with red though and I don't think it's Christmas-y. I justify that by reminding myself the red and green is found in nature with flowers and such, and especially depending on the shades of the hue, can be non-holiday outfits. Love that you have this skirt...it's one of my faves! XO

    1. You are totally right! It's not Christmassy, it's in bloom! That olive green is my latest color obsession -- I got a Harley off the swap group in that shade, and can't wait to ditch the cardigans and wear it out.

The print on this skirt is SO lovely!

  2. I'm glad Jenny skirts have so much fullness on their own! Full floof and desk chairs are definitely not good friends ;)

    1. Truth. And I already have this bad habit of walking into stationary, inanimate objects (walls, cords, desks, doorjambs… it's like the part of my brain responsible for understanding where my body exists in three-dimensional space just doesn't exist).

I am SO glad you started a blog, and super hype that the first two entries are Dapper Day-related!
