A Day in My Life

Routines are how I calibrate my life. I find comfort in familiar things and adapt fairly slowly to change, so I enjoy having daily and weekly rhythms that I can rely on. (I also don't get tired of the things I like, which is why I often order the same things at the restaurants we go to, and why I've seen Star Wars literally hundreds of times.) My little routines also help me to stay on track and be productive; without any concrete plans, I tend to just sort of relax and lose track of time.

Today, I figured I'd give you a peek into my daily routine. Since I'm such a creature of habit, it won't be too hard to remember what I do each day ;). I'm going to stick with the weekday routine, since it's a bit more fixed and definitely less embarrassing: the weekend edition involves far too much 'read the internet' and 'put feet up on the arm of the couch' for my ego to comfortably share.

  • 7:00: alarm goes off. Profanity ensues; snooze buttons are hit.
  • 7:15: get out of bed, briefly pester Jeff, get into the shower.
  • 7:35: get out of the shower, make a bowl of cereal. Grumble if my preferred bowls are all dirty and waiting for the dishwasher to be full enough to run. Eat cereal and comb out hair in between bites.
  • 7:45: get dressed and apply makeup. Usually I step in a puddle next to the bath mat at some point during this process, which is why I stopped putting socks or tights on until I'm ready to actually leave.
  • 7:55-8:10ish: freak out about how behind I am; take OOTD photo, post on Instagram. Scroll through feed for much longer than someone who just whined about being late should do. I haven't quite adapted to commuting by car instead of bus. My commute used to be prime Insta catchup time! But I'll take my beloved car over the bus any day of the week.
  • 8:15-8:45ish: drive to work; sing along to the mix CDs that have been in my car since 2012, interrupting myself when necessary to call other drivers rude things even though they can't hear me.
  • 9:00: turn on computer, fill up water cup and take the one measly cup of coffee I'm allowed during this whole pregnancy thing. Try valiantly not to think about how I'm already hungry.
  • 10:30: alright, this waiting for lunch situation is starting to get dire...
  • 11:05: FINE EMILY YOU CAN EAT NOW
  • 11:07: pass by some interesting things on the way to grab food.
There are always neat things to see in the Division of Birds!
  • 11:15: return to desk with food, open up Politico or the Atlantic while I eat.
  • 11:22: remember a task I need to finish.
  • 11:30: resume eating (I eat very slowly).
  • 11:35: realize that reading the news is making me super anxious and stop.
  • 2:00: contemplate a second lunch.
Once in a blue moon, lunch is this exciting!
  • 3:00: raid stash of emergency desk cookies.
  • 4:45: head for home. Realize on the way out of the museum that my friend Rebecca had messaged me ages earlier and I hadn't replied because I was working, and that I've now missed the opportunity to talk to her until the next day. Drive very carefully and think all sorts of 'kids-get-off-my-lawn' thoughts about erratic drivers on Lake Shore Drive.
  • 5:15: walk in the door, take off my shoes, and immediately changing into my inside-the-house-onesie, also known as an old ASOS romper.
  • 5:20-7:00ish: this is basically just a black hole that may or may not contain internet-reading, inefficient blog-related activities, and/or accidentally dozing off. On rare occasions, this time is spent at the gym.
  • 7:15-8:30: I cook the food and we eat the food.
I get very excited when Jeopardy! has a Chicago-related clue.
  • 8:30: watch that day's Jeopardy! episode. It's the only show our DVR is programmed to record every time.
  • 8:45-10:30ish: JEFF JEFF JEFF!
  • 10:30: begin getting ready for bed/hassling Jeff to go to bed early.
  • 11:15-11:30: zzzzzzzzzzzzz!

  1. Your routine sounds a lot like mine - we wake up, return home, and have the same return-home rituals! I get home around 5:15 as well and first thing I do is remove the outfit and put on my jammies LOL!

Also, "8:45-10:30ish: JEFF JEFF JEFF!" - totally read this/labeled this as you and Jeff's sexy time in my head and I am not ashamed of this thought ;)

    1. Bahahaha mostly it's me just pestering him/saying things like 'I'm so excited to be home with you!' and 'Jeff do you know who this is?' while pointing at my stomach ;). And YESSSS PJs are the first order of business after work!

    1. Happy Tuesday to you, too! And yeah, my workweek is a pretty rigid routine, but weekends are mostly just hanging out on various couchlike surfaces and pestering Jeff, so I figured a workday would be more fun to read about ;).

  4. You're routine looks a lot like mine when I'm working day shifts. I do about 6 night shifts a month so it really messes with schedule, but I still love my job. I looove Five Guys hehe. Also, what was the answer to the jeopardy question??

    1. Honestly, I'm so impressed by people who can switch back and forth between night and day shifts! I have such a hard time shifting my schedule by even a few hours. And the answer was ketchup!

  11. You do make me laugh! My sister takes a packed lunch to work and tells me it's more often than not that she eats it at 11am and then has to buy a new lunch at 1pm hahaha. Sounds about right really. I am intrigued, what are you not supposed to have on your hotdog in Chicago? I will be coming back to check as I really want to know!
