A Very Star Wars Halloween

It's almost Halloween, which means it's finally time for me to reveal this year's Halloween costume! I've been ridiculously excited about dressing up this year, since this is a costume I've been dreaming of for at least five years! If you know one non-style-related thing about me, it's my abiding obsession with all things space, especially the original Star Wars trilogy.

What you might not know about, though, is my abiding love of mashups. (Brace yourself: it's digression time!) The seed was planted in my high school jazz band, we used to occasionally do something we'd refer to as 'jazz fusion:' half the room would play one song, while the other half played a different song. (This was not a bandleader-sanctioned activity.) In college, I was obsessed with the very first Girl Talk album, and devised a running route that was exactly the right length for listening to the entire album. In grad school, I bonded with one of my now-closest friends during trips to mashup night at the Echoplex. (Fun fact: I stood in the front row when Lady Gaga played Bootie LA, right before she got famous. That is my one and only 'I saw XYZ before they were big' story.)

Anyway (and here's where that digression starts to make sense), I decided to go the mashup route for Halloween 2016. Without further ado, feast your eyes on the Pinup X-Wing Pilot!

I've had the urge to dress up as an X-Wing pilot for at least half a decade, but never quite figured out how to execute my dream. Fortunately, I stumbled upon a Luke Skywalker men's Underoos set on Zulily a couple of months ago, and knew at once that this was my year. 'Great,' I thought, 'now all I need are bright orange cargo pants!'

Red Five, checking in.

Unsurprisingly, the idea of buying bright orange cargo pants wasn't hugely appealing to me, so you can imagine my delight when I spotted this vintage orange petticoat on Fortuna Femme's Instagram! (Sidebar: they are the most incredibly body-positive, inclusive lingerie shop ever, and they introduced me to the best bra I've ever bought, plus the perfect bra for wearing with plunging necklines, and Jessica also recommended the only strapless bra I've ever liked. Go check them out! You'll be extra glad you did.)

Unfortunately, I was in England when I spotted this petticoat, so I thought there was no way I'd get home in time to snap up this petticoat. I commented on their Insta, and they offered to hold it for me, because they are the Platonic Ideal of a customer-oriented business. I got home, got paid, placed my order, and a couple of days later, a box bursting with the gorgeous vintage slip, shaper, lounging bras, and petticoat I'd ordered arrived at my door.

You worry about those fighters, I'll worry about those towers!

I do have something to confess: I hadn't thought about doing a pinup X-Wing pilot until I spotted Fortuna Femme's Halloween gift card-giveaway contest. (PS: today is the last day to enter! Head to their site, create a costume-inspiration collage using item(s) from their shop, and tag them on IG with the hashtag #FortunaHalloween2016 to enter.) I read the rules and BAM! Inspiration struck.

When you're dressed as an X-Wing pilot but can't resist that Princess Leia pose from the 1977 promo pics.

I borrowed a ski helmet and goggles from a paleobotanist pal, and voila: pinup Wedge Antilles!

Now for the fun part: what are you going to be for Halloween? If you've already dressed up, leave me a comment with a link to a picture!

  2. Oh man, this is awesome!! I love Star Wars, and I'm so glad you were able to fulfill a five-year dream! This is a fabulous mashup, and it's so very YOU!

I went as a cheerleader yesterday (read: I just wore a vintage cheerleader sweater I found at a flea market and called it a day), but tomorrow I'm thinking of going into work as Negan from the Walking Dead. Minus Lucille, of course.

    1. Thank you so much! I had such a fun time wearing this and my more work-friendly version.

I love your Walking Dead idea -- did you end up wearing the costume to work? Vintage cheerleader sweaters are so awesome! Are there many flea markets in Chicagoland? Related question: can we go to one???

  4. Oh my gosh yes I love this so much! I much prefer the old old Star Wars films - I saw a really cute R2D2 mug online the other day and it took all of my willpower to resist buying it haha.

    1. Thank you so much! The original movies are where it's at -- the prequels were an abomination and while the Force Awakens was better, there's no beating OG Star Wars! You have better willpower than me ;).
