Gorgeous Gingham

I'm going to New York today, and I couldn't be more excited! I'm dressed for maximum comfort, which doesn't make for a very fun blog post, so here are some photos of a more exciting outfit that I wore recently.

It's been a long, dreary winter, which I am so not used to anymore, so as soon as the sun peeked out, I jumped on the chance to go bare-legged and dress like a picnic. This winter is the first time I've consciously decided to keep the doldrums at bay by dressing brightly, and so far, I think it's been a success! In the past, I tended to default to muted tones and monochromatic (read: black) outfits when the weather turned chilly. This year, though, I've embraced the idea of wearing the change I want to see in the weather. While I can't definitely say that this is why Chicago had such a mild winter, I also can't say that it isn't.

There is something so classic, cheerful, and irresistible about red gingham. Well, all gingham is good gingham, but for me, a bold red pattern is sort of transcendent. It matches 90% of what I own and makes me think of wine-and-cheese picnics at the Hollywood Bowl. Winner!
I've been slightly obsessed with the combination of red and mint lately, and I think it works especially well when the red component is gingham. These MAK cropped cardigans have become indispensable since I moved to Chicago. I'm really not sure how I lived without them before; these days, I'm totally in "gotta catch 'em all" mode with all the colors!

I got this skirt from Modcloth as soon as it hit the site. It's a full circle skirt, in gingham, and it has pockets. I had a moment's hesitation over the elasticated back of the waistband, but ultimately the print/cut won out over those concerns, and I'm glad I didn't let elastic get in the way of the perfect skirt! In fact, the elastic at the back makes this skirt a viable choice to wear on my epicurean excursions, which is always a good thing. It also comes in black gingham, and I'm sorely tempted!

I really like how this skirt falls without a petticoat or any sort of underskirt. The fabric feels a bit like a stiffer linen: it has some texture, but more heft than linen, and it doesn't wrinkle easily. This is very good, since, while I own an iron, I'm not sure I know how to operate it. Finally, I love the length of this skirt: it falls right below the knee on my 5'2" frame. I wore it with my newest Star Wars shirt. It reminds me of travel posters from the 1980s, which is obviously awesome. A hair flower from Daisy Jean Floral Designs and my black-and-red Rebel Alliance brooch finished the look.
SO MUCH WIND.
Once again, I'm looking for my shoes. In my defense, though, the lighting made them blend into my legs.

    1. Thank you so much! I'm having a great time here so far, and spending lots of time with my family and friends here :)! Maxi dresses are a brilliant idea for traveling -- I have a few that I can wear with flats, since I'm super lazy about heels if I have to do any walking at all. Thanks so much for the tip!! <3!
