Can't Change My Spots!

Like many people, I consider myself a principled person. Many of my principles are things like 'black lives matter,' or 'feminism without intersectionality is bullshit,' or 'lying is morally impermissible,' or 'never fight a land war in Asia in the winter,' but some, of course, are style-related. Today's outfit conforms to two of my guiding style principles:

1) leopard is a neutral, and
2) red goes with EVERYTHING.

Any time I'm tempted to buy yet another leopard-printed piece of clothing but feel I should resist, I remind myself of Principle #1. Case in point: this lovely Trashy Diva number!

I'm a huge fan of Trashy Diva's Annette dress, since it's the perfect flattering sundress, so you'd better believe I've been ogling this rayon leopard mini since it was full price. (FYI: Trashy Diva's rayon is to die for.) But since I already have a very similar Annette in smoke leopard, I just didn't feel I could justify it until it went on super-sale. Once I saw this dress for half off, I couldn't resist.

It showed up shortly before my unexpected blogging hiatus, but I knew exactly how I'd style it even then. (See Principle #2 above). Red belt, matching red tights (which I may or may not buy in two-packs), black velvet bolero, and a pair of shoes that I affectionately think of as my Buffy boots = ready to take on the world!

Look, it's a new pose!

Fun fact: while I was shooting these photos, a giant gust of wind blew my skirt literally up and over my head, right as the shutter on my phone went off. These outtakes actually made Jeff laugh out loud at me. Sadly, those particular photos will never see the light of day.

What style principles do you swear by?

  1. Dang it! I kinda want to see these bloopers but yeah, I don't think they need to be made public either! Haha I agree with you 100% - red DOES go with everything!!! <3

    1. The best thing I can say about those bloopers is that it's like a slapstick flip book. But it's a NSFW slapstick flip book, so those will stay hidden ;). And yay, I knew I could count on you #teamred!

  2. I never thought I'd say this....but belts....everything should be belted!!

Love the outfit and that little capelette is to die for!

P.S. What the heck have you been doing? You look fab!!

    1. YES you are totally right about belts! They add so much to an outfit and make everyone's waist look amazing!

Thank you, my friend -- once I realized this capelet was velvet, I knew I'd love it. And honestly, it's the combination of heels and an above-the-knee dress: it gives the illusion of longer legs!

  3. Good principles, amply demonstrated. The image of your skirt flying has us all curious!

    1. Thank you! And that one's going in the vault forever, I'm afraid...

  4. I love leopard and I love red. But I don't know that I have ever put them together - although I always do red and black and leopard and black. That will now change! I especially like the belt with the tights - one red element just wouldn't have been enough to carry the day. Thanks for the inspiration! Kx

    1. Thank you so much -- I'm glad this gives you a new perspective on red and leopard! Also, I'm glad that the tights weren't 'red overkill,' so to speak. I'm a big believer in matching your belt to another accessory, but wanted to wear the black boots with the cape.

  5. Red does go with everything!

And never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

    1. I literally quoted that line to myself at work yesterday! Wallace Shawn is so charming, even when he's playing a knave.

  6. So good to see you back on the blog and smiling again. I was sorry to hear about your grandmother and your troubles in 2017. I hope things are looking up. This leopard looks lovely on you.

    1. Thank you so much <3. It's nice to feel like doing things I enjoy again, and having my mom visiting this past weekend really lifted both of our spirits. Hope you're doing well!
